Robert J. Smith, 91, of Worcester, formerly of Millis, died peacefully with family by his side on Sunday, February 22, 2015 in the Rose Monahan Hospice Home. His beloved wife of 54 years, Jeanette M. (Beauregard) Smith died in 2008.
Bob leaves many nieces and nephews, including Jeffrey Smith and Suzanne Mallaghan of Worcester, and Pamela Crowley of Sterling. He was predeceased by his brothers, George, William, John Vincent, and Richard. A son of the late John Michael and Ellen M. (O'Connell) Smith, he was born and raised in Worcester. Following his marriage, he lived 51 years in Millis before returning to Worcester in 2008.
Bob was a former Massachusetts State Police Trooper and member of the Millis Auxiliary Police. He also worked for many years at Chrysler Motor Corp. and Carling Brewery in Natick, and most recently for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. Bob was also a former member of St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Millis. He especially enjoyed woodworking and loved spending time with his wife and their dogs.
The family would like to thank the staff at Tatnuck Park at Worcester for their kind and compassionate care during Bob's residency there.
The funeral will be held on Saturday February 28, 2015 from DIRSA-MORIN FUNERAL HOME, 298 Grafton Street, Worcester with a Mass at 10:00 A.M. in Christ the King Church, 1052 Pleasant Street, Worcester. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A calling hour will be held on Saturday February 28, 2015 from 8:30 to 9:30 A.M. in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Tatnuck Park One Company Fund, 340 May St., Worcester, MA 01602 or to VNA Care Hospice, Rose Monahan Home, 120 Thomas St., Worcester, Ma. 01608.
