Robert J. Luikey, 71, of Millbury died on Monday September 19, 2016 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, Worcester.
He leaves his wife, Jo Ann (Elliott) Luikey, a son, Peter V. Luikey of Oxford and his fiancée, Katherine M. Madore, a brother, Richard P. Luikey, Sr, and his wife Carol of Millbury; a sister-in-law Nancy K. Elliott of North Oxford; a brother-in-law David R. Elliott and his wife Michelle of Auburn; a niece, Christine (Luikey) Roy and her husband Robert of Arlington, VA, a nephew, Richard Luikey, Jr, and his wife Kelley of Port Royal, SC, a niece, Deanna (Elliott) Zanella and her husband Steven of Dunbarton, NH, and a nephew Timothy Elliott and his wife Shanah of Simi Valley, CA, three grand nephews, a grand niece and many cousins. He was born and raised in Worcester, a son of Peter J. and Anna M. (Stakun) Luikey and has lived in Millbury since 1977. Robert graduated from South High School, Worcester. He was a graduate of Worcester State College, Class of 1967 and went on to earn his Masters of Education degree in 1970. He was a member of his class reunion committees at Worcester State College.
Mr. Luikey was an educator for the City of Worcester School Department. He taught for 35 years and retired from Quinsigamond Elementary School. He also worked Security for the Centrum and then the DCU Center from its opening in Sept. 1982 until the present. Robert served on the Town of Millbury Conservation Committee from 1981 to 2006. He was a member of REAM and served on its board and received its Educator of Distinction award in 2015 for outstanding volunteer efforts. Robert was a member of NEA, MTA and the EAW. He was also a member of and a very active parishioner and volunteer for Sacred Heart – St. Catherine of Sweden Parish. Robert loved being with family and friends and enjoyed spending time on Cape Cod.
The funeral will be held on Friday, September 23, 2016 from HENRY-DIRSA FUNERAL HOME, 33 Ward Street, Worcester with a Mass at 10:30 A.M. in Sacred Heart of Jesus Church, Sacred Heart – St. Catherine of Sweden Parish, 600 Cambridge St, Worcester. Burial will be in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours in the funeral home are Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation, P.O. Box 871847, Kansas City, MO, 64187.
