María Isabel (Montañez) Colón died peacefully in her daughters' home, surrounded by her loving family on Tuesday, March 3, 2015 at the age of 87. She was predeceased by her devoted husband of 64 years, Luis Antonio Colón Colón. She leaves her son, Luis A. Colón of Cidra, Puerto Rico and her daughter-in-law, Ana Delia Santiago; her son Carlos A. Colón of Worcester, MA; her daughter Maria Astolfi of Mesquite, Texas and her son-in-law Stephane Astolfi; her daughter Ivette Colón Barouk of Paxton, Ma and her son-in-law Thomas N. Barouk; and her son Oscar D. Colón of Springhill, Fla. She was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings: William, Emilio, Eloisa, Asunción, Hilda, Monserrate, Santos, Maria Estel, Delia, and Fidel. She was predeceased by her sister Maria Estel who died at the age of seven. (The loss and pain of this child, who was remembered as always singing, prompt the parents to name their next born daughter- Maria Estel). She is also survived by her family: Jenny, Emilio, Angel Manuel, Delly, Lila, Paquito, Vidal, Marina, and Luis Angel.
For over 30 years Mrs. Colón was a member of St. Joan of Arc Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was honored to be able to do fundraising for the church and her participation was to cook rice & beans, pork shoulder, and pasteles. Although she purchased the food and cooked the meals from her own money, she too paid for the meal at the fundraising event. She devoted her life to nurturing and improving the lives of others and opened her home to 10 foster children.
She was proud to be an Army wife, which oftentimes carried the burden of relocating her children from schools to schools and from state to state; never complaining and always singing & humming. After her husband retired in Georgia from the Army she lived in Clinton, MA., and she worked at: Vambrody, Colonial Press, Nylon Products, International Telegram & Telephone Co.(ITT). In the mid 1960's she studied at Leo's Beauty Institute in Worcester, Ma., and earned her license as a beautician. She also earned a certification as a nurses aide in the early 1980's and worked as a nurses aide at St. Francis Nursing Home in Worcester. Mrs. Colon worked all of her life to help her husband provide her children with the opportunities of an education, and the belief of God as the center of the home. Her hard worked paid off as all of her children hold college degrees and share a love for God.
The Funeral Mass will be on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at 1:30 P.M. in Saint Joan of Arc Church, 570 Lincoln Street in Worcester, MA.
