Robert C. Steinmetz, 70 of Auburn, died Tuesday Sept. 20, 2016 in UMASS Memorial Medical Center, Worcester.
He is survived by his brother, Charles M. Steinmetz of Auburn and also by many cousins. Robert was born in Worcester, the eldest son of an eldest son, the late Edward L. and Adele T. (Wolochowicz) Steinmetz and has lived in Auburn for many years.
Mr. Steinmetz was a Presidential Appointee to President Ronald W. Reagan and served in the Department of Health & Human Services as a Special Assistant in the Immediate Office of the Cabinet Secretary, Margaret Heckler. He also served as a Special Assistant in the Office of Intergovernmental and Congressional Affairs with the Department of Education and Secretary William Bennett. Mr. Steinmetz had also worked as a Counselor and Supervisor for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and was a Guidance Counselor at Bay Path Regional Vocational Technical High School. Robert was a vocal and visible member of the Massachusetts Republican Party especially in his early career. He also served on the Massachusetts Republican State Committee and was a Reagan presidential elector in 1980.
Mr. Steinmetz was a graduate of Auburn High School and earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from St. Anselm College, Manchester, NH. He also earned Master of Arts Degrees, in Guidance and Psychology from the Assumption College Graduate School. Robert also earned a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Studies in Rehabilitation Counseling from Assumption College. Mr. Steinmetz was a member of Our Lady of Czestochowa Roman Catholic Church, Worcester and its Knights of Columbus Council, 14757. He was also member of the parish 240 Club and the St. Mary Boosters Club.
The funeral will be held on Saturday Sept. 24, 2016 with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 AM in Our Lady of Czestochowa Church, 34 Ward Street, Worcester. Entombment will follow with his parents in Notre Dame Cemetery Mausoleum, Worcester. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, contribution in Robert's memory may be made to St. Mary's Schools, 50 Richland St, Worcester, Ma., 01610. So sorry to hear that my good friend, Bob, lost his courageous battle with Cancer. Bob was a good friend, an usher in my wedding and worked with me for a time at Bay Path. He was passionate about his conservative views and was a shrewd fund raiser for those organizations he loved. He will be missed by his friends and those who knew him best. My sincere condolences to his family.
